Niko Luoma uses photography as conceptual thinking; he works inside the camera, instead behind or in front of it. The exposure is his content and the whole process will manifest as images. Abstract photography is his central mode of expression; the image does not depict the world as such, but is constructed through the interaction of light, time and material.
Reworking imagery from the art historical canon, Luoma approaches each piece from the inside out, translating it rather than merely reproducing it. He treats light as an active, shaping element that determines how the image is constructed through controlled exposure. At the core of his practice is an ongoing exploration of the material properties of light. Through multiple exposures and the use of cut-out structures, Luoma builds each image gradually, allowing color and form to accumulate in layered sequences. Standard color lenses function as tools of modulation, shifting tone, atmosphere, and intensity.
The resulting works move forward, with recognizable references dissolving into fields of color, rhythm and luminosity. Rather than duplicating the canonical works, Luoma distills their essence; reinterpreting them through light, color and process. His images echo the spirit of their origins while existing as autonomous compositions, where perception, memory and materiality converge.
Niko Luoma has graduated from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, and has studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and New England School of Photography in Boston. Luoma is part of the Helsinki School collaborative. Luoma has exhibited his works at e.g. Serlachius Museum in Mänttä, Kunsthalle Weishaupt, Ulm, Kunsthalle Helsinki, Finnish Museum of Photography, Weserburg Museum für moderne Kunst, Mannheim, EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art and Riihimäki Art Museum. Luoma’s works are included in e.g. the collections of Aalto University Foundation, Ars Fennica Foundation, Danish National Museum of Photography, EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finnish State Art Collection, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Serlachius Museum, Swedish State Art Council, The Wharf Collection and U.S. Department of State Art Collection, among others.
