MIKKO PAAKKONEN: Maps, Fields and Fences

9 May - 1 June 2025

Mikko Paakkonen is an abstract and informalist painter whose work revolves around the theme of form. His art draws inspiration from asemic writing, mark-making, and traditional abstract expressionism, intertwined with the traces and textures of urban spaces.

Inspired by the abstract expressionist styles of the 20th century, Paakkonen juxtaposes this influence with the dynamic energy of graffiti and the traces it leaves in urban environments. This concept informs his creative process, where the spontaneity and movement inherent in graffiti, particularly tags, serve as a key source of fascination.

While his paintings do not directly emulate writing, their brushstrokes and gestures evoke the fluid, rhythmic motions of graffiti. As an aesthetic-focused painter, Paakkonen strives to create works that are both rhythmic and visually engaging, characterized by sweeping brush or palm strokes, vibrant colors, and carefully balancedcompositions.

The subjects of his works often dissolve into abstraction, an intentional approach. He sees these subjects as tools, leaving subtle references and hints within the pieces. Occasionally, he titles his works to offer viewers a glimpse of his inspiration. For Paakkonen, being part of the continuum of abstract expressionism is essential, and through his art, he aims to leave his own mark within its tradition.

Paakkonen holds a Master’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Finland, and previously graduated from the Arts Academy in Turku, Finland. His works have been featured in solo exhibitions both in Finland and internationally, as well as in numerous group exhibitions within Finland. Mikko Paakkonen’s works are included in the collections of Finnish Art Society, Kesko, Hyria Education and numerous private collections.
