Katja Tukiainen’s new exhibition deals with the theme of secret society. For some a secret society is very real and for others an exciting game. In the language of painting it means both. Tukiainen handles serious issues with a light narrative in the spirit of pop art and creates a dialogue between painting and minimalist drawing. Apart from positive energy controversial issues also arise on the surface against the backdrop of making the world a better place. ”My strong girl characters express values that I find important” she says.
Tukiainen’s art defies classification and her work has points of connection with e.g. pop art and magic realism. She combines references to popular and political issues and art history and utilizes different techniques. Her art consists of paintings drawings sculptures and installations and she has held many exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. Her works can be found in major public and private collections in Finland and for instance Sweden and Italy and her awards include the State Art Prize which she was the first comic artist to win. In 2022 she graduated as a Doctor of Fine Arts from the Fine Arts Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki.
