ABOUT

MAKASIINI CONTEMPORARY

Makasiini Contemporary is a contemporary art gallery founded in 2016. The gallery operates with a strong international approach and is dedicated to presenting ambitious, forward-looking contemporary art. Since beginning, Makasiini Contemporary has focused on building a program that combines clear curatorial vision, long-term artist collaboration, and active engagement with the international art scene.

Initially established in Turku, Makasiini Contemporary developed its profile over the course of nine years as an independent and internationally focused gallery. During this period, the gallery built a strong exhibition program and established extensive networks beyond Finland. As the gallery’s activities expanded, the need for a larger space became evident. In October 2025, Makasiini Contemporary opened a new, significantly larger gallery at Train Factory in Vallila, Helsinki. With this transition, all gallery operations were relocated to the Finnish capital, and the Turku space was closed at the turn of 2025–2026. The move enabled the gallery to consolidate its activities and operate within a broader international framework.

Makasiini Contemporary represents mid-career artists from around the world while maintaining a strong commitment to emerging talents. The gallery’s artist roster includes both Finnish and international artists. Central to the gallery’s approach is the development of long-term collaborations that support artists across different stages of their careers. Makasiini Contemporary works closely with its artists to support their artistic development, visibility, and positioning within an international context.

The gallery’s exhibition program is focuses on presenting contemporary art that engages with current artistic, social, and cultural dialogues. Exhibitions span a wide range of media and practices, reflecting the diversity of the gallery’s represented artists and its commitment to artistic experimentation and critical inquiry.

In addition to its exhibition program, gallery participates regularly in international art fairs. Through engagement with international markets and institutions, the gallery actively contributes to the circulation of contemporary art across borders.

The space at Konepaja in Vallila provides a gallery for large-scale and diverse exhibition projects and supports the continued development of Makasiini Contemporary as part of the international contemporary art scenery.
